When it comes to certain food/drink sources, often it will make us happy to pair them together. Some examples include:
- Peanut butter AND Jelly
- Burger AND Fries
- Pizza AND Beer
- Ice cream AND Hot fudge
- Chips AND Dip
- Wine AND Cheese
You get my point: We grow up getting used to eating/drinking things in combination. However, it is usually the case that both components of the “Happy Together” scenarios are derailing to our weight control efforts. Individually, each, in and of itself, can lead to weight gain but pairing them with each other doubles the damage.
So, if you are tempted to engage with one of the “usual suspects” (i.e. food/drink sources that harm our weight control) try to only consume that one source and not it’s “companion”. Try the burger with veggies, the pizza with ice cold water or the ice cream with no toppings.
The derailing foods/drinks that make us happy when consumed together also lead us to be quite unhappy when adverse health issues develop and we have to deal with those. Illness AND their consequences are not so “Happy Together”.
And for those of you that are 1960’s music fans, you knew this one was coming. Here is the 1967 Turtles’ “Happy Together”.
