Is Red Wine Good For Your Health?

Over the many years I have seen patients for weight control and have recommended they do not drink alcohol often, I have heard the retort: “But I drink 1-2 glasses of red wine a night and that is supposed to be good for your heart.”

Well, I am sorry to disappoint you red wine fans out there together with other people that enjoy beer, other wines and other alcohol beverages but this is the bottom line: Alcohol ingestion, in any form is BAD for your health and the definitive medical studies have proved that 1-2 glasses of red wine daily are NOT helping heart health or any other body system.

This entry was inspired by a study that was released this week that followed over 135,000 people over the age of 60 for 12 years.  The study once again showed that wine (or alcohol in general) was NOT beneficial for the heart.  Additionally, even the slightest use of alcohol increased cancer risk and the more alcohol usage, the higher the risk of cancer.

As many of you have heard from me during our visits over the years, I believe in the “balance” of life.  We are here to enjoy, as best we can, the “loves” of our lives, meaning the family, friends, pets, hobbies, foods, drinks etc while at the same time, striving to be as healthy as possible in order to be able to enjoy our list of “loves”.  The less alcohol usage the better as far as keeping us healthy.

And for you Neil Diamond fans out there:  His hit song “Cracklin Rosie” was named after a cheap wine bought by men in a native Canadian tribe where the men outnumbered the women by a large margin.  On Saturday nights, due to the lack of female companionship, the men would go down to the local general store and buy a cheap wine called “Cracklin Rosie” to drink and try to enjoy their Saturday nights.  And, Cracklin Rosie is NOT good for your heart, but listening to Neil Diamond is….enjoy.
