Cast Your Fate To….

Do you believe in the concept of “FATE”?  First, here is a definition of the word FATE: “the development of events beyond a person’s control, regarded as determined by a supernatural power.”

Well, I guess the first step in the concept of FATE is to believe in a “supernatural power” that can impact the course of our lives.  Most, if not all of us will relate stories about how we met our spouse, the timing of when a pregnancy occurred, how a business idea blossomed into a very profitable company, etc etc.  At times, it may seem that we are “fated” to have certain things/people occur in our lives.

Let’s now turn this discussion to the health care arena: At times, it appears that “FATE” may play a role in our health situations.  For example, I have had patients tell me that a random occurrence/situation saved their lives.  As an example, one of my patients that worked in the Pentagon told me that the copy machine in her office was not working and she had to leave the office and go to another part of the building to get the copy done.  The date: 9/11/2001.  While she was in the other office down the hallway, the plane hit the building at an area where everyone in her office was killed.  If not for the fact that the copy machine was not working, my patient would have been one of the people killed.

If we feel we are “FATED” to develop a serious health issue(s) that will lessen our life span, we may be apt to have the mentality to “Live Every Day As If It Was Your Last One.”  If that is the mindset, who cares what you eat, drink, smoke etc.  Do what feels good.  Now, if our family genetic history is such that many family members die prematurely of heart disease or cancer, we may be compelled to think that “FATE” will bring us to a similar early ending.

To an extent, we all can impact our health care FATE by following a healthy lifestyle of eating the right types of foods, drinking the right types of beverages and exercising.  We do not need a supernatural power to accomplish this.  Cast YOUR Fate to YOU…not relying on a superpower…or, in the case of the 1962 song, the Wind.
