Truth be known, this line is one of my “pet peeves” when people say this: LIVE EVERY DAY AS IF IT WAS YOUR LAST!”. Well, if we all lived “every day as if it were our last”, NONE of us would go to work, we would spend every dollar we had doing fun things that day and some may take the time to call the people we really despise and tell them exactly what we think about them and contact our loved ones and tell them just how much we love them.
BUT, for 99.99% of us, (fortunately) this will NOT be our last day on the earth. And we have mortgages to pay, children to put through school, car lease obligations, work responsibilities and many other taskings that we need to accomplish. We CANNOT do all the things we really want to do if we knew this was our “last day” to enjoy life.
Let’s bring this discussion to the healthcare arena: If we were to act as if this was our very last day, most of us (including me) would gorge on all of our favorite foods and drinks. Who cares how many calories, grams of carbs/fats, what these foods cumulatively can do to our livers, hearts, brains, etc? Bring those foods and drinks on!
BUT, if we acted every day as if it was our last, these hedonistic eating/drinking behaviors will make us quite unhealthy and most certainly lessen the quantity/health quality of our lives.
Striking the BALANCE is the theme we should embrace. We are not on this earth to stress about every calorie entering our mouth. We do need to enjoy the foods and drinks we like to ingest. However, the frequency/quantity of these more (for lack of a better word) hedonistic eating/drinking behaviors must be modified/controlled so as to keep us at a healthier weight, blood pressure, glucose/cholesterol levels etc.
Striking this balance is not easy but we must all strive for this. By doing so, we will enjoy life and have more time to continue to enjoy time with our loved ones as well as pursuing the activities we enjoy.
Can’t find any recognizable songs with the word “Balance” but I did watch (for the umpteenth time) one of my favorite, silly comedy flicks recently, “Hot Tub Time Machine”. Here is one of the songs from the soundtrack: “Jesse’s Girl”.
