Beware Of Salad Bars

On the surface, the concept of a “salad” for a meal conjures up healthy images.  Fresh greens, tomatoes perhaps some fruit and a lean protein added such as chicken or salmon.  This sounds completely compatible with a weight control journey.

Now, let’s bring into play the concept of the “Salad Bar”.  Several restaurants still offer these, most notably Ruby Tuesdays (not many exist anymore), The Chart House and others.  Present on these “Salad Bars” are LOTS more than lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes and other very low caloric options.  Various cheeses, croutons, fruits, nuts and very thick salad dresses adorn these “All You Can Eat” salad bars.

Quite often, opting for the Salad Bar along with your meal comes with a nicely discounted price.  If the Salad Bar is selected alone, it is LOTS more expensive than adding this on to your favorite burger or sandwich.  It is quite a deal to get this large offering salad bar for only $2.99 or $3.99 more AND you get to devour a burger and fries as well.

The point: If you are on a weight control journey try to take a pass on a “Salad Bar” and opt for ordering a salad off of the menu.  In this scenario, you will not be tempted to heap a bunch of “extras” such as croutons, cheeses, etc that will derail your weight control efforts.

Ruby Tuesdays, similar to Bennigans, are becoming dinosaur-ish in their eventual extinction.   Kind of sad that these restaurant fixtures are disappearing!

And in honor of Ruby Tuesdays, here is the Rolling Stones.
