An Opportunity To Swim

I am writing this entry on a day when the high temperature is expected to hit 90 degrees.  And this is not even summer yet!  In front of us are many months when the environment is quite conducive to include swimming as part of our exercise activities.

Swimming is a great exercise for a number of reasons including:

  • Very low impact on muscles and joints, so even those with musculoskeletal issues are able to swim as opposed to running and other pounding activities
  • Tones and strengthens muscles
  • Improves lung capacity
  • Provides a whole body workout
  • Improves heart health
  • Improves sleep
  • Reduces body fat

The caloric burnoff during an hour of swimming can vary from 300-1000 calories depending on the intensity of the swimming.

This is the time of year when community pools start opening, the county rec centers offer indoor swimming year round and pretty much every hotel and vacation spots we pick for our summer outings will have swimming facilities available for your use.

During the winter, throwing on the heavy clothing, driving to the local indoor pool, having to shower and then redress into warmer clothes all present challenges and excuses as to why we will not swim during the winter.  However, now and for the next 4-5 months an opportunity is present:  Get out there and swim!

And for those Rodney Dangerfield fans out there that loved his “Triple Lindy” dive in the very funny movie “Back To School” enjoy Rodney’s rendition of an old Beatles tune, “Twist And Shout”.
