Are Energy Drinks Safe?

Here is a riddle:  What is one thing that all of us have but wish we had more of?  Hmmm…well, seems like that there are LOTS more than “one” thing that would be a possibility including money, hair on our head and time we spend with our loved ones.  But for today’s purpose, the answer to this riddle is: ENERGY.  How many of you out there feel a lack of energy and wish you had more? I see lots of hands being raised.

In the quest to feel more energy, many people will reach for “ENERGY DRINKS”.  I remember years ago “Red Bull” was the only option on the market but now the supermarket shelves are lined with a bunch of different brands.  What is common to pretty much all ENERGY DRINKS:  Lots of caffeine, lots of sugar and legal stimulants such as guarana, taurine and L-carnitine.

The potential problems that this mixture can cause include:

  • Irritability/aggressiveness/anger
  • Palpitations/fast heart rate
  • Anxiety
  • Sleeplessness
  • Headaches
  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Diabetes (due to high glucose content)
  • Withdrawal symptoms when these drinks are stopped.

Here is an added issue for teenagers: When energy drinks are mixed with alcohol, the effects of the alcohol are not felt as much.  This will lead to more alcohol intake which carries an entire other health risk issue.

The bottom line for the use of Energy Drinks:  If only used occasionally, for most people, they are safe.  However, too many of these may lead to serious health issues.  And if someone has heart issues, surely take a pass.

And one of the funniest movies on my list of funny movies: “Role Models” starring Paul Rudd.  In the movie, he and Sean William Scott (Stifler in the American Pie series of flicks) sell Energy Drinks.  They wind up in legal troubles and need to donate time to a mentor program for youth.  The end scene was Rudd’s character trying to get his gal back.  For those of you that have seen the movie, enjoy.  For those that are okay for frat boy type pictures, see it!
