Most of us have probably heard the expression: “Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff”. This basically implores people to not worry/stress about trivial and/or insignificant matters. The expression came from an author, Richard Carlsen who in 1997 published a book entitled “Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff…And It’s All Small Stuff.
In bringing this concept to the weight control arena, I do believe that the “small stuff” can make a very large difference in success vs. failure in our efforts. Here is what I mean: There are obvious “large stuff” things that derail weight control efforts. A large milkshake, an ice cream sundae, a large pasta dish, a bottle of wine….these things and more can most certainly derail weight control efforts.
However, there are many “small stuff” things that seem pretty innocuous BUT in the aggregate, can thwart weight control efforts. Some examples of the “small” stuff are:
- 1-2 glasses of wine with dinner
- Handfuls of grapes several times a day
- Cheese added to meals/salads
- Sharing popcorn while watching a show
Take a step back and self-evaluate whether any “small stuff” food/drink items are part of your behavioral patterns and if so, take the necessary steps to significantly reduce/eliminate them.
So, I am having difficulty finding a song to post with the theme “Small” but I sure can find lots of titles that have the word “Little”…a Crazy Little Word Called Love…enjoy Queen!
