The Importance Of The Liver

The proper functioning of our organs allows us to live.  Every organ in the body from the heart to the brain to the kidneys and others are vitally important for our survival.  Today I want to focus on one of these critically important organs:  The LIVER.

The five main functions of the liver are:

  • Filtration.
  • Digestion.
  • Metabolism and Detoxification.
  • Protein synthesis.
  • Storage of vitamins and minerals.

The main causes of liver disease include:

  • Infectious diseases such as Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C
  • Excessive alcohol usage
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Non alcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Medications/toxin exposure
  • Inherited disorders

In the early stages, liver disease may not produce many symptoms but simple routine laboratory blood testing will show an elevation of “liver enzymes”.  As liver disease progresses, signs and symptoms may include yellowing of the skin and sclera of the eyes, fatigue, weight loss, musty breath, itching, dark urine, light colored stools, difficulty with digestion and mild brain impairment.  In the later stages of liver disease, abdominal swelling, worsening mental status, heart failure and ultimately death will occur due to the liver not being able handle the functions required of it.

The prevention of liver disease will include, most importantly, cessation of alcohol use and weight control.  These are under our control!

Take care of your liver and your liver will take care of you.

No songs about liver, but concerning “Organs”, here is one of the most notable songs featuring organ playing…enjoy Procol Harum’s “A Whiter Shade Of Pale”.
