When I write an entry on a Sunday morning, for some reason I hop in my DeLorean, get this up to 88 mph and go back in time to my memories of various events and things, and often this is the music I grew up with. Last night on the 60’s satellite radio station I heard a song from 1965 performed by a group called the “Animals” and the song was “We Gotta Get Out Of This Place. This song was incredibly popular back then and did make it to Rolling Stones top 500 Rock and Roll songs of all times, placing at 233.
The song, “We Gotta Get Out Of This Place” was very pertinent to those mid 1960’s times as the Vietnam War was raging and a good part of the U.S. population as well as military members themselves wanted no part of fighting this war. This was a very popular song played by war disc jockeys such as the one played by Robin Williams in the movie “Good Morning Vietnam”. The song was also used frequently at high school proms and college graduation parties as the graduating students would love to poke fun at their educational institutions.
So, what pertinence does a 57 year old song have to do with a weight control blog? Here goes: I believe everyone should, at times, take a step back, and analyze “This Place” as this relates to many aspects of that person’s life. The elements that comprise the personal “This Place”?:
Happiness in a marriage/relationship
The city or town we live in
Job satisfaction
Financial status
Feelings about the state of the world
Enjoyment (or lack thereof) of non-work time
Health status
I listed “Health Status” as the last bullet point but in actuality, it probably is the most important contributing factor to the status of “This Place” for each person. Without good health, many of the elements that comprise “This Place” will be negatively impacted.
To weight control: When weight is not under good control, “This Place” may include many medications being used for co-morbidities chronic, pain, poor self-esteem, chronic fatigue and many other negative factors. “This Place” is not a good one.
So, if your “This Place” is not to your liking, and one of the major reasons for this is your current weight, then YOU Gotta Get Out Of This Place. Become committed and focused on shedding that weight.
Enjoy a throwback song that will evoke memories for many of older folks. And for those Veterans out there, especially those that were in during the turbulent Vietnam times, THANK YOU, THANK YOU and more THANKS for your service.
