Anyone out there feel that time passes very slowly? I see no hands raised. We have all heard the expression that “the days go slow but the years go fast” and similar references to the fact that time seems to rush by us. For anyone with children/grandchildren out there, it just seems like yesterday when they were small and playing with you and now they are all grown up with lives of their own.
One of the issues associated with “time flying by” is often neglecting certain aspects of our healthcare/health maintenance. Personally, I have shown up for a dentist appointment thinking I was last there for a checkup/cleaning about 1 year ago and the staff informs me that it has been 2 years since my last visit. Eye checkups, colonoscopies and other routine health maintenance checkup are often delayed way past the point of being “due”.
Take a step back and ask yourself the question: “When was the last time I had____?” and fill in the blank with all of the health action items we know are important for us such as:
- Routine physical exam from our primary care doctor
- Age-appropriate screening tests such as mammograms, colonoscopies, etc
- Complete laboratory blood testing
- Eye exams
- Dental exams
There are many more bullet points that can be added to this list.
The point: By staying vigilant and taking action on preventative health testing we will heighten the chances of living a healthier and happier life. And I did think of a circumstance when time goes by very slowly: When we suffer from a serious health issue: Pain and suffering slows time down dramatically. However, this is not the situation we want that slows the passing of time.
Stay vigilant and engaged in your healthcare!
And here are some lyrics about time going by slowly…guess the song!
And time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
