Why Do We Need To Take A Break?

Here is a definition of the word “BREAK” as a noun: . a pause in work or during an activity or event.   Here is another definition of “BREAK”, once again as a noun: an interruption of continuity or uniformity.

We all need and takes “BREAKS” from various activities such as:

  • Working non-stop on a stressful work project
  • Performing rigorous physical activities such as mowing a large lawn on a hot summer day
  • Watching/taking care of the needs of a baby
  • Being in the presence of an annoying person/people that suck the living energy out of you

When we take a “BREAK” we will often accompany this rest period with a coffee, snack, smoke (for those smokers out there), nap or other intervention deemed as helping you relax/feel better during your “BREAK”.

Over the years I have had a number of patients tell me they need a “BREAK” from their dietary efforts.  They find if stressful, difficult and mentally exhausting to continue to follow a disciplined high protein/low carbohydrate/low sugar dietary approach.  It is almost like they feel in dietary “Prison” and they desperately need a “parole” of sorts.

Let’s flip the script for a bit:  Wouldn’t it be great to take a “BREAK” from such things as:

  • Looking in the mirror and not being happy with who/what you see
  • Not having to reach for bottle of pills of medications being used to treat the co-morbidities of poor weight control
  • Looking into your closet and seeing a bunch of beautiful clothes that don’t fit
  • Feeling tired and sluggish
  • Experiencing knee, back and other musculoskeletal pains

The act of losing weight is not fun or easy.  This requires lots of diligent, focused work.  Yes, we may want “”BREAKS” from the process of losing weight but we should all prioritize “BREAKS” that are really needed  as detailed above.  Keep focused and avoid taking too many “BREAKS” from your journey to higher levels of health and happiness.
