Here is a definition of the word “REWARD”: “A thing given in recognition of one’s service, effort, or achievement.”
We all like the concept of being “rewarded”, especially when these “things” come from other people. However, we often find ourselves providing self-rewards. After we have worked a long/difficult day, accomplished some great achievements, given our time/efforts for others, we feel that we deserve “rewards” for our diligent/dedicated behaviors.
There are MANY “things” we can do to self-reward including:
- Scheduling a massage
- Enjoying a day at the spa
- Planning a fun vacation
- Buying a new article of clothing or jewelry
Many more bullet points can be added to the above list.
Probably the most frequent, affordable and readily available rewards are centered around things we place in our mouths. This could be alcohol containing drinks, high-caloric snacks/foods, desserts and other consumable items that will derail our weight control efforts.
Changing the paradigm as to how we “self-reward” will be important to long-term weight control. The aforementioned bullet point rewards are perhaps more costly and not as immediate as food/drinks, but these self-rewards do no damage our health.
