It is almost officially summer but for all intents and purposes, post Memorial Day we are all in the summer mentality. This usually involves lots of outdoor activities. Sun exposure to can be detrimental to our ‘eye health” with the following potential complications:
- Photokeratitis:
. This is like a sunburn on the cornea, causing pain, redness, blurred vision, and sensitivity to light. It’s usually temporary and clears up within a couple of days.
- Pterygium and Pinguecula:
. These are growths on the conjunctiva (the white part of the eye) caused by sun exposure. Pterygium can grow over the cornea and affect vision.
- Cataracts:
. Long-term UV exposure can contribute to the development of cataracts, which cloud the lens of the eye, impairing vision.
- Macular Degeneration:
. Some studies suggest that sun exposure may increase the risk or worsen macular degeneration, a condition that damages the central part of the retina (macula) and affects central vision.
- Solar Retinopathy:
. This is a more severe form of damage to the retina, often caused by looking directly at the sun (like during a solar eclipse). It can lead to vision loss and pain
The best ways of protecting your eyes:
- Wear Sunglasses: Choose sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays.
- Wear a Hat: A wide-brimmed hat can provide additional shade for your eyes.
- Be Mindful of Reflections: UV rays can be reflected off surfaces like water, snow, and sand, so take extra precautions in these environments.
- Avoid Staring at the Sun: Never look directly at the sun, especially during a solar eclipse, without proper eye protection
There are many beautiful things and people to see in our world…keep those eyes healthy so you can enjoy these sights!
