There are many instances when people do not take corrective actions on their deleterious health-related behavioral patterns because the mindset is “IT’S TOO LATE”. For example, the cigarette smoker diagnosed with Stage IV terminal lung cancer may not quit smoking because the outcome is already sealed. The alcoholic that develops cirrhosis of the liver and is not a candidate for liver transplant may feel it is “too late” and therefore not stop drinking.
When we focus on weight control, I am hard pressed to find scenarios when it is “too late” to be helped by shedding weight. When we consider the co-morbidities of poor weight control, such as diabetes, hypertension, back pain, sleep apnea, and others, even in late stages, shedding weight will stand a great chance of improving the quality of life. Cancer-co-morbidities of obesity such as colon, ovarian, pancreatic and others may also be favorably influenced to some extent by getting to a more favorable weight. As an example, the immune system is helped by being at a healthier weight and often cancer sufferers succumb to infections.
So, try to NOT allow your thinking to get into the realm of “IT’S TOO LATE” as this relates to the need to shed weight. A more optimized weight will bring you better health and happiness at any stage of your life.
And for you 70’s music fans out there, you know what song will be posted to this theme of IT’S TOO LATE. Enjoy Carole King. And if you have never seen the Broadway musical “Beautiful” based on the life of Carole King, it is a SUPER show.
