Egg Nog-A Holiday Tradition

I am writing this entry in early December so we are now post-Halloween, post-Thanksgiving and Christmas is only 3 weeks away.  One of the traditional drinks that are present at gatherings this time of year is EGG NOG.

Eggnog is traditionally made with eggs, egg yolk, sugar, milk, heavy cream and vanilla extract. It’s often spiked with brandy, rum or other liquor, and topped with freshly grated nutmeg and/or cinnamon sticks.

Here is the nutritional content of 1 cup (254 grams) of Egg Nog:

ONE cup (254 grams) of Egg Nog contains approximately:

Calories: 224

Total Fat: 11g

Saturated Fat: 6.6g

Cholesterol: 150mg

Sodium: 137mg

Total Carbohydrates: 20g

Dietary Fiber: 0g

Sugar: 20g

Protein: 12g

As you can see, Egg Nog is not exactly a ‘Phase 1” type of beverage in our dietary plan but it also is not so bad.  BUT, most people spike Egg Nog with different types of alcohol, thereby turning a “not so bad” drink into a killer from a weight control standpoint.

So, my advice: If you like those traditional holiday drinks, allow yourself some Egg Nog BUT do not add the alcohol.

And the Number One Christmas song ever (And written by a Jewish guy, Irving Berlin), WHITE CHRISTMAS.
