Active vs. Passive

First, I want to wish all of you a very happy and healthy 2025.  This is the first blog I am writing this year and I am now going on 30 years of writing these entries, most of which very few people read.  For those of you that do, I want to thank you for taking the time to read this stuff and I hope the content helps you even if to a very minor extent.

Today’s topic: The concept of “passive” vs. “active” as this relates to your health journey.

First, here is a definition of “passive”: accepting or allowing what happens or what others do, without active response or resistance

And now, a definition of “active”: engaging or ready to engage in physically energetic pursuits

I will add on to the definition of “active” to also include engaging in mentally energetic pursuits.  For example, playing a game of chess is lots more “active” than sitting with your eyes closed thinking about nothing, although both are not very “physical” in nature.

Striving for a normalized weight and overall healthier state requires lots more “activity” than “passivity” and I am NOT only referring to physical exercise/activity.  Planning, strategizing, journaling and other “active” endeavors are required to be successful in shedding weight and improving overall health.  There is nothing “passive” about the process.  Passivity will lead to the status quo being maintained, and if you are NOT at a healthy state now (weight or otherwise) that status quo is not acceptable.

Take a step back and assess your own relative state of passivity vs. activity and take the necessary steps to become more active both mentally and physically.  By doing so, you will become healthier and happier.

And Carl Douglas got all us up and active with this unique song from 1974.
