Every morning I wake up to a spam-ish e-mail entitled “Word of The Day”. I am about 50-50 in knowing the definition of the word that is posted. Yesterday the “Word Of The Day was “IMMUTABLE”, and the definition is: “unchanging over time or unable to be changed.”
Most/all of us are sort of rooted in certain behavioral patterns. Following a routine provides comfort and predictability. Even lower life forms such as our beloved dogs are happiest when they are allowed to follow their routines. Breaking our routines often produces stress and even unhappiness.
Let’s bring this discussion to the weight control arena: People that struggle chronically with weight control have behavioral patterns (routines) that are producing the poor weight control. These behaviors need to change. The “change” is easy to state (i.e. eat more protein and vegetables, less carbs/sugars/starches/alcohol and exercise more. However, with 70% of our population being overweight/obese, these are not easy behavioral changes.
An overweight/obese person cannot be “IMMUTABLE” if that person wants to shed weight. Lifestyle and behavioral changes must be embraced for there to be any chance of weight loss success.
Habits are hard to break…especially those that provide immediate gratification. Do NOT be IMMUTABLE.
