Here is a definition of the word “COMPLACENCY”: A feeling of calm satisfaction with your own abilities or situation that prevents you from trying harder.
As much as I hate to admit it, this new phase of my professional life (i.e. only working several hours a day) has led to lots of complacency on my part. In the “old days”, your good Doctor would wake up at 4 am, walk the dog, exercise for 90 minutes, write a DAILY blog, and then go to work for 8 hours, if not more, a day. Now? Get up after 6 am, walk the dog, maybe exercise a bit and then at my leisure, go upstairs to the library and spend only a few hours working. And this blog I have written for decades? As opposed to the daily efforts I put in to do this, nowadays I maybe churn this out once a week. I have so much more time now to do this but yet I write far less than I used to when I had my much busier schedule.
Am I lazy? Just a burned out old doctor dude? Other? I believe the answer is that I have fallen into a complacency state. I have far less stress, have much less daily taskings, and in many/all other ways, simply do not have that drive that had me doing so many more things when I was younger.
When it comes to our health, “Complacency” is NOT a good thing. If we do NOT tr harder to do the following there will be consequences:
- Ensure we keep up with recommended health screenings
- Follow a health dietary plan
- Carve out exercise time
- Quit the derailing habits that hurt us (alcohol intake, poor diet etc)
The “consequences” will unfortunately be the higher likelihood of health problems.
Let’s all try to get out of “complacency” states if we have fallen into this. By doing so, there will be a much better chance of a healthier and happier life.
No songs about complacency, but here is a tune from a singer that keeps going and going and going…and he is now 90….enjoy Frankie Valli.
