Avoiding The “I QUIT” Mentality

I was reading an article how a player for the San Francisco 49’ers football team that simply quit in the middle of the game.  He walked off the field in the third quarter and told his coaches that he is not coming back.  The reason apparently related to him being relegated to a reserve player because another player at that position returned from an injury.  This “Quit” may have cost him his football career as I am certain there will not be many/any teams interested in signing a guy that did this in the middle of a game.

We all have most likely been in situations where/when we decided to “quit” something.  This could be a job, a volunteer position, membership in a club or other.

“QUITTING” can often lead to improved health such as giving up:

  • Alcohol usage
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Excessive time spent on social media
  • Illicit drugs

In the weight control arena, “Quitting” nighttime snacking, daily alcohol usage, sugar based desserts, breads and many other food/drink sources contribute to success in shedding weight.  However, the “I QUIT” mentality in the weight loss process results in failure to lose the weight.  That “I QUIT” mentality usually stems from frustration of putting effort in, not seeing the expected results and then deciding to give up the efforts.

How to avoid the “I QUIT” mentality when it comes to weight control efforts?

  1. Ensure quick results are seen:  Seeing 1/4/1/2 pound of weight loss a week will not cut it.  Go on Phase 1 of our dietary plan and then you will be encouraged by seeing aggressive weight loss.  This will keep you engaged in the efforts
  2. Keep at the forefront of your mind the important reasons why it is so important for you to lose that weight.  Never lose sight of those reasons as these will serve a motivation to continue your efforts.

Being a “Quitter” when it comes to giving up unhealthy life style choices is a good thing.  Quitting in the middle of a football game or on our weight loss efforts is not a good thing.

Anyone out there remember a 60’s group called “Blood Sweat and Tears”?  Here is a tune from their most popular album in 1968: “I Can’t Quit Her”.
