I have not heard of this previously, but apparently the second Friday of every January is called “NATIONAL QUITTERS DAY”. The reason: This is felt to be the time when most people abandon their New Year’s resolutions. These resolutions often are focused on self-improvement, with weight loss being the most prominent of these.
There are lots of features of the human operating system/human nature that serve as obstacles to change. From craving instant gratification to losing motivation and choosing the path of least resistance, it’s not surprising that lofty goals end up back on the resolution board a year later. How many times have people resolved to lose weight, quit alcohol, start exercising etc. only to give up quickly and then have the same “resolutions” the next year?
One of the ways of achieving and continuing with your resolutions is to first break these down to smaller segments:
- Where will you do it?
- How will you do it?
- How will you get there?
Identify the barriers/challenges that stand in the way of your success so you know what you are up against.
Then, initiate a program that is achievable, rewards you in small increments and accompany these activities with enjoyable diversions such as listening to music, watching a show while you exercise or other techniques to not get bored.
Try to adopt a “Growth Mindset”. We are all, no matter what our age, trying to become “better” on multiple levels over time.
None of us like to think of ourselves as “Quitters”. Do NOT celebrate/embrace “National Quitters Day”. Stay focused on making your life healthier and happier.
Anyone out there remember a 1960’s group “Blood, Sweat And Tears”? Known best for “Spinning Wheel” and “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy” here is a lesser known song: “I Can’t QUIT Her”.
