The title of this entry appears to be a mistake. The famous, original line (KEEP YOUR FRIENDS CLOSE AND ENEMIES CLOSER) is thought to have originated by Michael Corleone in the movie “Godfather Part 2”, but in fact, the quote came from Sun Tzu, a military general, philosopher, strategist, and writer from the Eastern Zhou period of 771 to 256 BCE.
While the concept of “KEEPING YOU ENEMIES CLOSER” may be appropriate for Mafia wise guys or military opposition, when it comes to the weight control arena the opposite is true. Here is what I am referring to:
During your long-term weight control journey, there will be a number of food and drink items that will derail your efforts. In fact, many of these are the exact food and drink sources that caused the problem in the first place. When these food/drink sources are “close” to you (i.e. in your pantry, refrigerator, freezer, work desk, etc) they are very easily accessed. However, if they are not in your house or workplace, they cannot be consumed unless you order them in or get in your car and fetch them.
The point: Try as best as you can to keep the food and drink sources that produce weight gain as far away as you can. The easier they are to reach, the better chance that they will be reached for. Go to the stores with a shopping list and only list the items you truly need and are healthy for you. At work, do NOT have snacks in your desk that hurt your weight control efforts.
Enjoy a classic scene from The Godfather Part 2.
