During our lives all of us will be faced by certain health related conditions. Some/many of these may be quite mild, self-limited and pose no significant danger to our long-term health and wellness. However, there are other health conditions that will pose a threat to our long-term quality of life.
There is an importance to being cognizant of “managing” vs. “curing” a health-related condition(s).
As an example, hypertension can be managed with the use of dietary and/or medication interventions.
However, taking medication for a certain period of time does not “cure” the underlying blood pressure issue. There are certain cancers that can be “cured” by various treatments and the affected people do not need to “manage” this cancer for a lifetime. Hodgekin’s Disease is an example of this type of cancer.
Let’s turn our focus to weight management: Despite the social media frenzy of GLP therapy having us believe that Ozempic, Zebound and others are “curing” obesity, they are most certainly NOT providing a “cure”.
Rather, they should be looked at as a tool to help manage this “disease” (obesity) that impacts over 100 million Americans. This disease “management” involves dietary changes and overall behavioral modification.
There is difference in mindset between “curing” vs. “managing”. When we feel we are “cured” the foot comes off the gas pedal and we feel free to go back to the usual activities/behaviors we were involved with before we were faced with the “cured” problem. However, when we are in the mindset of “management” we are prepared to remain vigilant and continue in our efforts.
“Weight Management “ is the concept we should all embrace as opposed to “Weight Curing”. By doing so, we will avoid the “Yo-Yo dieting” that is experienced by so many overweight/obese people.
