The metaphor “The Final (or Last) Straw” was first noted around the early 1800’s and this refers to the last in a series of unpleasant events that finally makes you feel that you cannot continue to accept a bad situation.
“The Last Straw” could be focused on a work situation, where, after being berated/treated poorly by a supervisor, the last barrage was the “final straw” resulting in “I Quit”. Perhaps after having very poor service at a particular restaurant, the worst service to date was “The Last Straw” resulting in a vow to never go to this restaurant ever again.
Now, let’s head to the health arena: Many of us are often guilty in not responding to the first signals we receive that something may be wrong with our bodies. Perhaps some minor chest pains or abdominal pains are felt and these are chalked off to non-serious causes. However, the “Last Straw” may be some more serious pain or event that finally prompts us into action, i.e. getting medical help.
Specifically in the weight control arena, many people will allow the pounds to pack on but “The Final Straw” that motivates a weight losing effort is a diagnosis such as diabetes mellitus or other serious health condition related to poor weight control.
I recommend that we all try to embrace the concept of “The FIRST Straw” as opposed to the LAST when it comes to symptoms/lab testing/weight on the scale as these relate to potential health issues. Taking action at earlier stages provides a much better chance of reducing the likelihood of serious, life threatening health issues developing.
Be proactive in your healthcare…do NOT wait for a “Final Straw” as the “Final” could be a true Final.
And for you Broadway fans out there, here is the FINAL scene from the memorable ‘Phantom Of The Opera” movie.
