I would bet that most/all of us have experienced times when we simply cannot remember the name of an actor/actress, politician or other well-known person that we on most every other occasion, can quickly come up with that name. Also, there are times when we use the term “brain fart” to describe a lost train of thought or other brief memory lapse. However, when should we be concerned that there is perhaps a more serious cause of memory lapses that are a harbinger of an impending, worsening dementia? Here are some key signs that the memory lapses may portend something lots more serious than a simple “brain fart”:
- Frequent forgetting of important information: Repeatedly forgetting appointments, names, or recent events.
- Difficulty completing familiar tasks: Struggling with everyday activities like cooking or driving due to memory issues.
- Getting lost in familiar places: Being unable to navigate areas you know well.
- Trouble finding words: Difficulty recalling words during conversation.
- Asking the same questions repeatedly: Asking the same question multiple times in a short period.
- Changes in mood or personality: Sudden mood swings or noticeable personality shifts.
- Misplacing items frequently: Losing things regularly and being unable to retrace your steps.
- Poor judgment or decision-making: Making decisions that seem illogical or out of character
If any of the above bullet points seem to be occurring, it is most definitely time to visit with your doctor for an evaluation. Workup will include cognitive testing as well as brain imaging.
We will all experience a decline in cognitive functioning to a lesser or greater extent as we get to the advanced ages. The good news is that there are several nee medications becoming available that seem to be of help in slowing down the progression of the mental decline.
And in an entry about MEMORY, here is a great one from “The King”.
